The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has particularly condemned the BJP-dominated Central government on the proposed new law the Waqf (Amendment) Bill saying that it is aimed at Muslims. She has alleged that the Centre has denied state governments an opportunity to participate in the decision-making processes and that the Centre is implementing a narrowly &ldquo;divisive policy.&rdquo;
In a state assembly debate, while moving a vote on a resolution against the bill, Banerjee pointed out that the centre had not involved the states in the formulation of the legislation. These unilateral acts, she said, were detrimental to the federal character of India.
The Chief Minister also took a potshot at the JPC proceedings on the bill, claiming that the BJP was shutting the opposition team. She added that due to this suppression, opposition members had boycotted the JPC.
Banerjee also echoed the same doubt that the BJP itself has in this bill where it seems to target the Muslim community only under the pretext of dealing with issues related to Waqf property. She dared the government to use the same parameters of reassessment against the properties belonging to Hindu temple trusts or churches adding that &ldquo;the targeting of a specific community fits its agenda nicely&rdquo;.
Also, Banerjee raised doubts about the BJP&rsquo;s capacity to get a two-thirds majority in Parliament to pass the bill.
In international relations, the Chief Minister wanted action to be taken about Hindus in Bangladesh implying her apprehensions of religious minorities in the neighbouring countries.
